Indie studio Grizzly Games
Has released the final content update for Thronefall, its critically acclaimed minimalist tower defence game. Update 2.11 delivers 12 innovative mini-modes, marking the end of active development as the team pivots to a new project.
What’s New in Update 2.11?
The update introduces experimental challenges designed to push seasoned players:
- True Endless: Endless randomised enemy waves on the Totend map, distinct from existing Eternal Trials.
- Reverse Siege: Destroy an enemy base on Freifort a "spicy" twist to difficulty praised by the developers as "surprisingly fun."
- Summoner Gold: Risk-reward mode where gold is only produced through summoning circles, allowing players to set levels of challenge.
These modes, available right from the get-go but recommended to experience after completing the campaign, look to enjoy the previously "untapped potential" of Thronefall through puzzle-like mechanics.
QoL Improvements & Bug Fixes
- Accessibility: Colour blindness settings for changing enemy colours.
- Controller Support: Improved detection and dynamic tutorial icons.
- Language Packs: Added Korean, Italian, Ukrainian, and Czech localizations
- Crash Fixes: Save/Load completion glitches in Eternal Trials and stuck ghosts with the God of Afterlife mutator
Farewell, Devs
In a warm note, Grizzly Games stated, "Thronefall is officially complete," except for critical fixes. The studio appears to be drooling over its next project since announcing Thronefall on 2023 Early Access, and here is what the developers said:
"This is not a goodbye… we'll see you around, either in Thronefall or for whatever comes next!"
Why This Matters
Thronefall created a niche by combining strategy with minimalist design. The loyal community it garnered, though, may be at the end with this final update, but the "hidden gem" status is going to remain with Steam and Nintendo Switch users.
