Capcom Announced the Impending Shutdown

Of its multiplayer third-person shooter spin-off, Resident Evil Re:Verse, after a bumpy three-year ride. The game, initially packaged with Resident Evil Village in 2021 as part of the franchise's 25th-anniversary celebrations, will be delisted from digital stores on March 3, 2025, with servers closing permanently on June 29, 2025.

Important Information for Players

  • March 3, 2025: Re:Verse will no longer be sold or included with Resident Evil Village.
  • June 29, 2025: All online services end, disabling multiplayer access and premium pass progression.
  • Existing owners can redeem codes and use RP Boosters until shutdown.

Why Re:Verse Struggled

Critics and fans criticised the game for:

  • Repetitive gameplay: Limited maps and modes failed to retain players.
  • Lack of depth: shallow combat compared to mainline Resident Evil titles.
  • Technical issues: Matchmaking took too long and servers crashed at launch.

Lady Dimitrescu and Albert Wesker have joined the cast since the updates, but Re:Verse couldn't even equal the success of Resident Evil Resistance or earlier multiplayer attempts like Outbreak.

Capcom's Future Plans

Capcom has already aligned the shutdown with its renewed interest in single-player experiences:

  • Resident Evil 9
It is currently under development. Rumours indicate Jill Valentine will not be the headliner.
  • Remakes: Rumours point to Resident Evil 5 and Code: Veronica remakes following RE4’s success.
  • Crossovers: Dead by Daylight continues integrating RE cosmetics, including recent Ada Wong and Wesker skins.

Fan Reactions

The community expressed mixed feelings:

  • Disappointment: Players lament wasted potential for a RE-themed PvP experience.
  • Optimism: Many support Capcom’s pivot to story-driven horror and remakes.

What’s Next?

  • While Re:Verse fades, the franchise thrives elsewhere:
  • Films/TV: A new film from Barbarian director Zach Cregger and a Netflix series are in development.
  • Merchandise: Partnerships with companies such as Funko and McFarlane Toys expand the RE universe.
