Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra Unveils Wakanda’s Role in World War II

Marvel’s Wakanda continues to expand beyond the silver screen, now making its mark in the highly anticipated game Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Skydance and Marvel Games recently revealed key details about the hidden nation during a new interview with Entertainment Weekly. Amy Hennig, Skydance New Media director and award-winning writer, provided insights into how Wakanda will shape the game’s narrative within a gripping World War II setting.

Wakanda in 1943: A Hidden Nation Unveiled

The game explores Wakanda during a pivotal era. T’Challa’s grandfather, Azzuri, takes center stage as the reigning Black Panther, portrayed by The Walking Dead’s Khary Payton. In this story, Azzuri forms an unlikely alliance with Captain America (voiced by Drew Moerlein of Horizon Forbidden West) to combat the Nazi threat. This collaboration starkly contrasts the tension-filled dynamics seen in Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Civil War.

Hennig’s vision emphasizes the unique atmosphere of Wakanda’s dense jungle juxtaposed with the snowy landscapes of Occupied Paris—two key destinations in the game. “Wakanda at this point in time is hidden away from the outside world and protected by this impenetrable jungle,” she explains.

A World on the Brink of Discovery

Hennig sheds light on Wakanda’s precarious position during WWII. The nation’s non-interventionist stance is challenged as global events unfold, threatening its secrecy.

“They have to protect their interests,” Hennig notes. “The world is getting smaller. No satellites yet, but there will be soon. You can shoot down planes, but how long can you stay in the shadows?”

The narrative explores how Wakanda balances its isolation with emerging global threats, setting the stage for a thrilling story that ties into Marvel’s larger lore.

Introducing Nanali: A New Wakandan Hero

In addition to Azzuri, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra introduces an original Wakandan character: Nanali, a skilled spy stationed in Occupied Paris. Voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke, Nanali brings expertise in infiltration tactics and becomes one of the four playable characters in the game. Her presence highlights Wakanda’s covert involvement in the global conflict and adds depth to the narrative.

Contrasting Worlds, Shared Battles

The game’s settings from the jungles of Wakanda to the snow-covered streets of Paris immerse players in contrasting environments, reflecting the distinct worlds of its protagonists. These transitions emphasize the collaboration between Azzuri and Captain America, uniting them against a common enemy despite their differing backgrounds.
