Prime Video is set to release Like a Dragon: Yakuza
A series adaptation of Sega’s famous Yakuza franchise, later this month. A new trailer for the show has surfaced, offering a closer look at how Kazuma Kiryu’s story will be retold, with Takeuchi Ryoma portraying the iconic character. The series, produced by Masayoshi Yokoyama, head of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, promises a shift toward “gritty realism,” which has left fans with mixed feelings.
The trailer has sparked discussion among Yakuza fans
With some expressing excitement about seeing how the series will be adapted for television, while others are concerned. A significant point of contention is the apparent absence of the humor and over-the-top absurdity that the video games are known for, a core aspect that has contributed to the franchise's popularity. The trailer appears to present a more serious tone, which may alienate fans expecting the quirky elements of the original games.
While it's still early
Many are urging fans to reserve judgment until they see how the series balances these new elements. Given the rich storytelling and unique character dynamics in the Yakuza franchise, the show has the potential to attract both newcomers and long-time fans. The series will be split into two parts, with the first half debuting on October 24, followed by the second half on October 31.
Coinciding with the show’s release
Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the original Like a Dragon: Yakuza game, will also be launching on Nintendo Switch. Although the game has been available on other platforms for some time, its Switch debut is expected to ride the wave of excitement generated by the show.
