God of War TV Series: Showrunner Shares Surprising New Update

The popular God of War TV series on Prime Video is making considerable progress. The show, which was announced late last year (2022), is based on the popular game of the same name that came out in 2018. Development has taken place quietly for over two years. Now, showrunner Ronald Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, shares a big update that shows Amazon’s faith in it.

Amazon Planning God of War for Two Seasons

Moore told The Sackhoff Show that Amazon had already ordered two seasons of God of War. This information hadn’t been made public until now, revealing the company’s massive investment in the series. According to Moore, he is currently in the writers’ room working on the show’s script ahead of production.

At the moment, I’m adapting a video game called God of War, said Moore. It’s a huge game, and Amazon has ordered two seasons of it. One of the creative consultants at the company has invited me to work on the series. I am literally in the writers’ room working on that.

Amazon’s Confidence in God of War

It is uncommon for a company to sign on to two seasons of a series before production kicks off, which indicates that Amazon has faith in God of War. Since the storytelling and action of the game are epic in the series, they would have to work with a huge budget. If successful, it may cement its position as one of the most ambitious adaptations at Prime Video.

Moore's Gaming Experience and Vision

Surprisingly, Moore confessed that he didn’t play God of War due to difficulty adapting to new controllers. Because he worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Outlander, and For All Mankind, that would make him a great choice to lead the adaptation. His background with character-driven storytelling and large-scale world-building fits the God of War universe quite nicely.

As of this time, Amazon has yet to reveal a release date God of War

This project is still in early development, with writing still in progress, but it is expected that casting and production will follow soon. If everything goes well in development, we could see some more updates before the end of 2025. With Amazon completely supporting the series and a competent showrunner to lead the efforts, the God of War TV show is going to be one of the most exciting video game-to-TV adaptations in a long time.
