Rumored Multiplatform Shift
Microsoft’s highly anticipated Fable game, initially promoted as an Xbox exclusive, might eventually release on PS5. Jez Corden of Windows Central suggested on X/Twitter that Microsoft’s recent shift in strategy includes releasing games as “timed exclusives” rather than permanent platform exclusives. He also mentioned that Fable’s “monstrous” production costs could lead to its eventual availability on competing platforms.
Comparisons with Indiana Jones
Corden noted Fable might follow a pattern similar to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which will launch as an Xbox exclusive in 2025 before heading to PS5. As of now, Fable is officially confirmed only for Xbox Series X|S and PC, but its PS5 release seems plausible given Microsoft’s evolving business decisions.
Microsoft’s Multiplatform Strategy
In 2024, Microsoft began allowing some former exclusives like Sea of Thieves and Grounded to appear on PS5 and Nintendo Switch. The announcement of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle for PS5 before its Xbox release indicated a major policy shift. If Fable also takes this route, it may reflect the increasing pressure on game companies to recoup rising production costs.
Potential Brand Impact
This strategy has sparked debates among Xbox fans. Exclusive titles like Halo have traditionally been crucial in selling hardware, akin to Nintendo's Mario and Sony's God of War. Expanding Xbox’s franchises to rival platforms might generate short-term profits but risks diluting the console's exclusivity appeal.
As game budgets continue to climb, the question remains: will this strategy help Microsoft sustain its gaming brand in the long run?
