In a significant blow to the gaming industry

Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios has laid off their entire mobile team. This development follows a troubling trend of layoffs in 2024. Despite a well-received update for Mortal Kombat Mobile just days ago, at least fifty employees have been affected. The layoffs come as part of broader downsizing efforts by Warner Bros. Games, triggered by the disappointing performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League earlier this year.

The news of the NetherRealm Studios layoffs was shared online by several affected employees via LinkedIn, as initially reported by TechRaptor. Tony Lazzara, a former Quality Assurance Analyst, expressed his disappointment, stating,

"Unfortunately, yesterday NetherRealm's mobile team was shut down. A ton of very talented people were put out of work. We had live services on multiple titles such as Mortal Kombat Mobile, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat Onslaught. I was also affected. Every single person I've worked with on that team is an amazing collaborator, passionate, and very creative."

Samantha Edward, another QA Analyst, confirmed the news, adding, "Every single person I've worked with on that team is an amazing collaborator. Every single person brings skills with them that have been honed through fast-paced, high-stress mobile development cycles. We're all probably in shock, but a lot of us will be posting something like this today or soon. If you have any leads on a position that my wide technical skill set could be useful in, please feel free to reach out to me."

Antonio De Francesco, a former NetherRealm developer, shared his own experience, stating,

"I am sad to share that I am looking for a new role and would greatly appreciate your support. I deeply valued my time at WB/NetherRealm and am grateful to everyone who helped me grow in my career there."

Despite the layoffs, a NetherRealm representative told TechRaptor that there are "currently no plans to shutter Mortal Kombat Mobile and Injustice 2." However, the studio has decided to "sunset" Mortal Kombat: Onslaught " in the coming months, expressing gratitude to the players who have supported the game.

The netherrealm studios layoffs underscore the ongoing challenges in the gaming industry, particularly in the mobile sector. The talented individuals affected by these layoffs are now seeking new opportunities, hoping to apply their skills and experience in new roles.

NetherRealm Studios is known for its iconic Mortal Kombat series, and while this news is a setback, the studio's commitment to its other projects remains strong. The community's support for those impacted will be crucial during this transition period.
