Ghost of Yotei Needs to Innovate Beyond Ghost of Tsushima

While Ghost of Tsushima was praised for its stunning visuals and immersive open-world design, its gameplay followed a familiar formula found in other open-world games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Elden Ring.

With the recent announcement of Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch now has the opportunity to break away from this formula and introduce more inventive gameplay mechanics that distinguish the sequel from its predecessor.

To stand out, Ghost of Yotei should offer more diverse and engaging activities within its open world. In Ghost of Tsushima, certain tasks, such as petting foxes and writing haikus, became repetitive over time.

A more dynamic and varied approach to side activities would help keep players engaged and make the experience feel more meaningful. Additionally, a non-linear narrative structure, where players can choose how to progress through the story, could provide greater freedom and align with modern open-world expectations.

The combat system also requires more flexibility. In Ghost of Tsushima, the stance-based system restricted players by forcing them to switch between stances for specific enemies.

Ghost of Yotei could benefit from a more fluid combat approach, potentially incorporating the new dual-wielding mechanic teased in the trailer. By allowing greater freedom in combat and offering more inventive world design, Ghost of Yotei could elevate the open-world genre and surpass the impact of its predecessor.
