Destiny 2 Roadmap Reveals Major Changes: Two Expansions Planned for 2025

Bungie is shaking things up for Destiny 2 with a bold new strategy for releasing content, starting in 2025. After wrapping up the epic "Light and Darkness Saga" with The Final Shape expansion, fans were left wondering what’s next for the beloved online shooter. Thanks to a recent blog post from Bungie, we now have a clearer picture of the game's future, including a major shift in its content delivery approach.

In a surprising move

Bungie revealed that starting in 2025, it plans to launch two expansions per year, replacing the previous model of one major annual expansion. The first of these expansions, currently codenamed "Apollo," will arrive in the summer, followed by "Behemoth" in the winter.

These releases will also be accompanied by a significant content drop in spring 2026 as part of a larger initiative known as "Frontiers." Alongside these expansions, players can expect four free updates each year to further enrich the game.

Destiny 2 Game Director

Tyson Green, explained the reasoning behind the change, noting that while they are proud of expansions like The Final Shape, the development process for these large-scale releases consumes a massive amount of resources.

By shifting to two mid-sized expansions each year, Bungie hopes to open up more opportunities for innovation and exploration in Destiny 2.

"We need to free ourselves up to explore and innovate with how we deliver Destiny 2 content so we can invest in areas of the game that will feel more impactful to players." said Green.

This change will allow Bungie to focus more on the core experience of the game and introduce new formats, stepping away from the one-shot campaign structure that has been in place since Shadowkeep.

One of the most exciting elements of this new format is

The introduction of nonlinear storytelling, starting with Apollo. Instead of experiencing a linear story from point A to point B, players will now have the freedom to explore different narrative threads in any order they choose. This dynamic approach to storytelling will allow players to uncover the plot at their own pace, making each journey through the expansion unique. Narrative Director Alison Lührs elaborated on this, explaining that while players can choose which parts of the story to explore first, the remaining threads will still be available to experience later. The more storylines players explore, the further the overall narrative will progress.

These sweeping changes come at a crucial time for Destiny 2

The past year has been challenging for Bungie, with the studio facing multiple rounds of layoffs partly due to the game's underperformance. By introducing this revamped content strategy, Bungie aims to re-engage the player base and create a more compelling experience that keeps players coming back for more. Whether this gamble will pay off remains to be seen, but the upcoming expansions promise to bring fresh ideas to the game’s universe.

With new expansions, nonlinear storytelling, and regular updates, the future of Destiny 2 is taking shape in an exciting new direction. Only time will tell if this approach is the right one, but it certainly has the potential to bring a new level of engagement to one of the most popular online shooters in the world.
